A business plan is a tool every business should have. The plan is a requirement for any business that is seeking outside financing, and serves as a road map for the business to follow.
A plan has several sections, starting with an executive summary, which is a plan overview; a financial section, which includes a minimum of two years projected financials; and a marketing section, which identifies the business' competition and the strategic marketing plan to capture a desired share of the market.
One other section, product and service offerings, describes the products and services the business intends to offer. Provide an overview of the coffee house industry and the structure of the coffee house.
Give a brief history and provide sales and trend history of coffee houses in the local area. Also, provide the type of business structure the business will take, which as a coffee shop will most likely be a retail establishment.
Finally, explain the legal structure the business will take, such as a sole proprietorship, limited liability company or corporation. Give a brief description of the coffee house. Include facts such as the square footage of the building, how many patrons it will hold, an idea of the decor, where it will be located and the type of seating the coffee house will have.
Do not go into great detail, but instead give an overview of these things. The description should be no more than three or four paragraphs. Detail the products the coffee house will offer. List the type of beverages the coffee house will offer, if the beverages will be served in takeout cups, stoneware or both, what types of food or snacks that will be sold and if there will be specific menus for breakfast and lunch.
Again, great detail is not required, just enough information to give the reader an idea of the types of beverages and foods that will be offered.
Map out any miscellaneous services the coffee house will offer. Such services could include Internet access, a section for live performances, a banquet or meeting room, whether magazines, newspapers or books will be sold on premises and if the coffee house can be rented out for special events.
Tie everything together by explaining how the coffee shop's features will benefit its customers and how it differs from its competition. For example, if no other coffee shop in the area offers live entertainment, the benefit of offering such a service could be additional entertainment options for the patrons.
Or, if your coffee shop features coffee imported from Jamaica while your competition offers domestic coffees, offering a higher grade of coffee could be a benefit to your patrons that enjoy Jamaican coffee.
Tip Provide enough information about the business that the reader understands the business' structure and offerings, but stop short of describing everything in great detail. If the loan officer or potential investor has specific question, he will ask.
Warning Know the market and the competition. Investors want to be sure the business knows whom it's competing against and that the business has a clear plan for setting itself apart from the competition.
